Foods for Women on Their Menopause


Menopause is inevitable. If you are a woman between the ages of 49 to 52, menopause will occur and there is nothing that you can do about it. Menopause is also referred to as climacteric. It is a stage in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods stop for good and that she can no longer bear children. There are signs so you will know if you are already experiencing it.

Doctors say that for one year without vaginal bleeding, menopause starts to happen. It begins if your periods become irregular, experiences hot flashes, shivering, reddening of skin and sweating. Other signs may include trouble sleeping, vaginal dryness and mood swings. The signs vary between women.

All signs are pretty uncomfortable. The least thing that you can do is to eat right to at least alleviate whatever you are feeling. Here are the best foods for you:

  • Carbohydrate-rich snacks: There are cases of menopausal women who feel depressed and low. This is because the hormones fluctuate which affects the serotonin – the happy chemical. When you have low serotonin, you crave for sweets that is why you should consider carbohydrate-rich snacks like whole grain bagel and popped corn. These foods will be enough to improve your happy hormones.


  • Calcium-rich drinks: There is a reason why doctors are recommending increase intake of calcium as you age. Remember that during and after menopause, women will deal with different health issues like growing risk of osteoporosis. There are women who consumed right amounts of calcium so they are not at risk of developing osteoporosis. However for those who do not get enough, they should increase calcium intake to at least 1,200 mg. Start with milk.

  • Vitamin D-rich drinks: You have to know the importance of vitamin D with regards to your bone. Vitamin D will stop bone loss and it is needed to totally absorb the calcium. If you want to drink it, you should look for unsweetened ones like almond milk, hemp milk, coconut milk and the like. For solid foods, you should look for fatty fishes like salmon.


  • Water: Water is helpful regardless of your condition. Doctors are recommending women to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. This is to prevent bloating and dryness. If you find plain water boring, you can just add fruits and herbs for flavouring. Do not consider flavoured waters because they contain high sugar which is not good for you either.

Getting older in this sense is not so much fun. Many old women here in Singapore attest to its discomfort but it is part of life so you have no choice but to deal with it.
